Walk Like an Egyptian

It’s not supposed to snow in Madrid.

At least, that’s what our city walking tour guide repeatedly told us bemusedly as three-to-four inches quickly cloaked the city.

“I’ve lived here for seven years and I’ve never seen it snow like this!” our tour guide exclaimed, as she, too, became a tourist in her own city. “Here! Take a picture of me in front of the palace! No one will believe me if I don’t show them this!”

Snow falling upon the Monument to Philip IV in Plaza de Oriente. The Royal Palace is in the background.

I don’t particularly enjoy being cold or in the snow, and both descended upon Madrid as Cathleen and I marked spending a week’s time there. It was stunningly beautiful, but, like, my toes were cold. “Should we go somewhere new?” Cathleen asked.

“Sure,” I said. “Could we go somewhere without snow?” We had had our fun exploring the capital city, but not two days earlier we had enjoyed a coffee outside in the sun sans coats in nearby Plaza del Sol.

When we got back to our hostel in Madrid that night, we began searching for flights.

Madrid, being a large, international hub of a city, opened us up to many economical flight options. As it would happen, though, anything nearby was also experiencing similar weather. We widened our search radius.

“What about Greece?” Cathleen asked. “It’s pretty reasonable.”

“Oh I see that flight now. Interesting…” I mulled it over. The history. The Parthenon. The Acropolis. Santorini. Mykonos. Pheidippides and the Battle of Marathon. I can make “grease” jokes…*beat*…I don’t have any grease jokes yet, but I’m sure I can think of a few if I “stick” with it. “That could be fun!”

We widened the search radius a little more. “Hey, we can go to Egypt on the same day for the same price,” I said.

“Well how on earth are we going to pick?” Cathleen asked.

Kid’s got a point.

We spent the next hour or so being relentlessly indecisive in our planning.

What would costs be in each area when we got there? How feasible is transportation within the country? What cultural differences are there? And also…how do you pick between Egypt and Greece?!

You can decide…no, you can decide…I decided the last thing…well the last thing decided was who was going upstairs to get the phone charger…this is bigger than that…if someone doesn’t decide, we’re going to end up staying in Madrid for another day. Omg…someone needs to make this decision for us.

The hostel lounge had been cycling through a Rolodex of adult and contemporary pop hits. John Mayer, Ariana Grande, Panic! At The Disco, Lorde…

…so imagine our surprise when a particular one of The Bangles’ songs found its way into the shuffle…

“Walk Like an Egyptian.”

We both smiled. “Guess this solves that.”
